Fraternity Welcomes New Eminent Supreme Recorder & Chief Executive Officer

EVANSTON, IL – Eminent Supreme Archon Steven Churchill and Supreme Council members are pleased to announce the appointment of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity's next Eminent Supreme Recorder and Chief Executive Officer. Mike Sophir (Nebraska ’85) has been named as the 14th ESR in the organization’s history, and his appointment shall take effect on May 15, 2017.

Sophir first joined the Fraternity Service Center staff in 1986 as an Educational and Leadership Consultant. He was then promoted to Assistant Director of Chapter Development and, in 1989, to Director of Chapter Development, where he supervised all field staff, chapter operations and the supporting volunteer programs. He left our staff in 1992 and has been focused on marketing, communications, strategic planning and fundraising development in his career for the past 25 years.

In addition, Sophir has worked for and has had significant roles on both the agency and client side of business in for-profit and non-profit ventures. He has worked with major retailers, airlines, packaged goods, software and music artists as well as with major healthcare providers, education and advocacy organizations.

During his undergraduate tenure at Nebraska Lambda-Pi, Sophir served in numerous positions, including Eminent Deputy Archon, Recruitment Chairman and IFC Recruitment Chairman and was awarded Greek Man of the Year. As a member of the chapter, he co-founded Do It Sober, a campus- and community-based alcohol-awareness program that remains an SAE initiative today. He also served as an undergraduate member of the 50th Anniversary Leadership School Planning Committee. Sophir graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and with minors in history, English, speech and Portuguese.

“On behalf of the Supreme Council and with thanks to the entire Selection Committee, I am pleased to welcome Mike Sophir as our new Executive Director,” said Steve Churchill, Eminent Supreme Archon. “His extensive background in both the private sector and the non-profit arena will be huge asset for SAE as he leads the charge as our CEO to advance the mission, vision and values for our Fraternity. He is a strategic thinker and true gentleman. We welcome him to the team and have every confidence that he will be a visionary leader for the Realm.”

“I am very excited about this next stage of my life both professionally and personally,” Sophir said. “I want to thank the Supreme Council for this opportunity and Blaine Ayers for the honor and integrity with which he has served our Fraternity as ESR over the past six years. I see SAE as the organization where all of our sons have the opportunity to grow and become true gentlemen and serve as leaders and role models on our respective campus — as well as one where our alumni find value throughout their lives. I am humbled and honored to serve in this role and, with your help, we can do great things for our Fraternity.”

The appointment of Sophir to the position marks the completion of the search for a new Executive Director that yielded many qualified applicants for the position. The Fraternity formed an executive search committee comprised of representatives from all key stakeholder groups, including the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation, the SAE Financial & Housing Corporation, Inc., the Council of Province Archons, Past Eminent Supreme Archons, Past Eminent Supreme Recorders, at-large alumni and an undergraduate representative. A full listing of the search committee can be found HERE.

The committee considered all applications thoroughly and diligently and then conducted interviews of applicants identified as semi-finalists. Following those interviews and the committee's careful evaluation and deliberation, members advanced the finalists to the Supreme Council for face-to-face interviews at the Levere Memorial Temple.

“It was an honor to serve as the chairman of the search committee,” said Thomas Dement, Eminent Supreme Deputy Archon. “The success of the search process is due in large part to the hard work and commitment of the search committee members, and the Fraternity thanks them for their service.”
